Anodized Aluminum Sheets

What is anodized aluminum sheet? Anodized aluminum sheet is a product made by anodizing a high-quality aluminum alloy flat sheet. The anodizing process is to place the aluminum sheet in an electrolyte as an anode and perform electrolysis under a specific solution and current. In this way, an aluminum oxide film will be formed on the surface of the anode aluminum sheet, with a thickness of 5-20 mic, and the hard anodized film can reach 60-200 mic.

Compared with ordinary aluminum sheets, anodized aluminum sheets have improved hardness and wear resistance, good heat resistance, excellent insulation, and corrosion resistance, and will not corrode in salt spray for thousands of hours. There are a large number of micropores in the thin layer of the oxide film, which can absorb various lubricants and is suitable for manufacturing engine cylinders or other wear-resistant parts; the film has strong micropore adsorption capacity and can be colored into various beautiful and bright colors. It can also be used as a substrate for aluminum-based copper-clad laminates, which are compounded together with thermal conductive glue and copper foil and used as circuit boards.

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that forms a durable ceramic layer on the surface of aluminum. The surface oxide film never falls off and is corrosion-resistant, UV-resistant, and fingerprint-resistant. The anodized surface is transparent and can be electrolytically colored to provide a variety of color options.

Why Choose 5052 Alloy to be Anodized

The main reason for choosing 5052 aluminum alloy for anodizing is its chemical composition, physical properties, and corrosion resistance.

Magnesium is the main alloying element in 5052 aluminum. The high content of magnesium makes 5052 have good corrosion resistance in marine or humid environments, which can block the corrosion of chlorides. The anodizing process actually enhances the corrosion resistance by forming a hard aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) film on the surface of the aluminum alloy. This oxide film can effectively isolate the corrosion of aluminum alloy by external moisture, air, chemicals, etc., thereby enhancing the service life of the material. 5052 aluminum alloy shows excellent corrosion resistance in marine environments, and the protective effect of the anodized film further enhances this advantage.

The tensile strength of 5052 is usually between 210-230 MPa, and the yield strength is about 190 MPa. Anodizing not only enhances its surface hardness, but also improves its scratch resistance and wear resistance.

What Is Black Anodized Aluminum 5052

Black Anodized Aluminum 5052 is a black 5052 aluminum sheet made by anodizing process.

First, select a plain 5052 aluminum sheet for degreasing and cleaning to remove impurities and oil stains. Then soak the aluminum plate in an acid solution to remove the surface oxide layer and dirt, and finally wash the aluminum plate with water to remove all residual chemicals.

The second step is to put the aluminum plate into the electrolytic cell, apply current between the aluminum plate and the anode plate, and an oxidation reaction will occur on the surface of the aluminum plate to form an oxide layer. The oxide film is a very dense and wear-resistant protective layer with good corrosion resistance, hardnessy surface porosity.

The third step is black dyeing. The anodized oxide film is transparent and has many tiny holes on the surface. In order to become a black anodized aluminum 5052 sheet, the anodized aluminum plate needs to be immersed in black dye, and the dye enters the aluminum alloy through the holes of the oxide film, thus presenting a black appearance. The dyeing time and dye concentration will affect the final color depth and uniformity.

After dyeing is completed, the aluminum sheet needs to be sealed. By soaking the aluminum sheet in hot water or steam, the high temperature is used to expand and seal the pores of the oxide film. This step is to cure the dye to prevent fading or shedding.

Anodized 5052 Aluminum Sheet Features

High hardness and good corrosion resistance

  • Anodized aluminum sheet has the characteristics of high hardness, good insulation, strong corrosion resistance, and strong adsorption capacity.

Anti-fouling and fireproof, high safety

  • The surface of anodized aluminum plate does not leave fingerprints or stains, is easy to clean, and does not produce corrosion spots. There is no paint or any chemical substances on the surface. It does not burn at a high temperature of 600 degrees and does not produce toxic gases, meeting the requirements of fire protection and environmental protection.

Good weather resistance and easy processing

  • Standard anodized aluminum sheets will not change color, corrode, oxidize, or rust when used indoors for a long time. Thickened anodized aluminum sheets can be used outdoors and can be exposed to sunlight for a long time without changing color. The product can be stamped continuously at high speed, which is convenient for direct processing into products without complicated surface treatment.
